Do Tree Roots Damage Foundations, Sidewalks, and Sewers?

The fear is almost universal: a big maple or oak near the house, and the assumption that its roots are quietly crushing the foundation, jacking up the sidewalk, and clogging the sewer. Some of that is real, and some of it is myth. The useful reframing for any Monroe County homeowner is to stop asking whether the tree is attacking the house and start asking where the weakness already is. Roots follow water and oxygen. They exploit defects. They rarely create them from scratch. Here is what actually happens, and what to do about it.
Do tree roots really crack house foundations?
Rarely. Tree roots almost never punch through a sound, intact foundation, because they are not strong enough to break solid concrete or stone. What they do instead is slip into cracks that already exist, and in Rochester's heavy clay soils they can worsen the shrink-and-swell cycle that moves shallow footings. How do tree roots get into a sewer line?
Roots follow water. They do not drill into a sealed, watertight pipe. They find the tiny leaks and loose joints in aging clay or cast-iron laterals, where moisture and nutrients escape into the soil, then grow toward that source and expand inside the line. The old, jointed pipe is the weak link, not the tree acting alone.

USDA Forest Service researchers found that root damage to sidewalks, curbs, and gutters is more pervasive and costly than root damage to sewers, with sidewalk repair the single largest infrastructure expense tied to street trees. The variables that decide whether it happens are set before the tree is even planted: species, mature size, and how close the planting sits to the pavement. How far from the house should a tree be planted?
Match the setback to the tree's mature size, not its nursery-pot size. A common planning rule of thumb keeps small ornamentals roughly 10 feet from foundations and hardscape, medium trees around 20 feet, and large shade trees 30 to 50 feet away. The specific numbers matter less than the principle: the wrong tree planted too close is the actual problem, every time.
Right tree, right place is the whole game. A columnar or small-stature species can live happily near a driveway, while a silver maple or a large oak needs real room for its roots and canopy. Can you cut tree roots without killing or destabilizing the tree?
Cautiously, and within firm limits. Small roots away from the trunk can often be cut with little lasting harm. Cutting large structural roots near the base is a different matter: it can remove a big share of the tree's anchoring system, hasten decline, and turn a healthy-looking tree into a fall hazard. Never sever a major root just to stop a sidewalk or pipe conflict without a professional assessment first.
The numbers are sobering. The Morton Arboretum notes that cutting just one structural root within a few feet of the trunk can remove up to 25 percent of the root system. UF/IFAS guidance adds that roots one to three inches in diameter are the major structural roots holding a tree upright, and it warns that root pruning too close to the trunk (closer than about three times the trunk diameter) "can result in trees falling over or dying." A destabilized mature tree is a safety issue, not just a health one, so it belongs in a tree risk assessment before any cutting happens.
